Audio files come in numerous formats, so there is always a chance that you will encounter an unfamiliar format, which is not supported by your preferred media player or portable device. In situations like this, a conversion utility can solve everything. A good example is fre:ac. It comes with various encoders, which enable you to convert audio files to and from MP3, MP4/M4A, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, WAV and Bonk formats. Also, the application is capable of ripping audio CDs and it can store the tracks in the same output formats.

Loading audio files or CD tracks into a list, choosing an output format and path and clicking a button is sufficient to start converting. Files can be loaded through an Open dialog or by dragging and dropping them over the user interface. If you have an audio CD loaded, you only need to click a button, located on a toolbar and the application will load its tracks right away, without any further user input.

It is worth mentioning that fre:ac will process everything you add to the list. Even if you import local audio files, in several formats, as well as an audio CD's contents, the application will convert everything, according to the same set of configurations. Once they are loaded, you can choose which files or tracks to convert, by clicking their corresponding check boxes.

Besides selecting an encoder, to convert the files to a certain format, you can also make a series of configurations to that encoder, on a separate window. Depending on the selected encoder, you will find different configuration options, for changing the output quality, bit rate, sample rate, file format and much more. In addition, fre:ac gives you the possibility of editing the ID3 tags of your songs. You can browse through your CD's contents, through your local files or albums and edit the information on the same tabs.

Pros

The application is capable of converting audio files and tracks between various formats. Ripping audio CDs is another possibility. Additionally, fre:ac allows you to edit the tag information of your audio files and CD tracks.

Cons

The fonts of the user interface are a bit small and hard to read for some people. While using fre:ac, you will be able to convert your favorite songs to and from various formats, without any kind of difficulties, regardless if they are on your hard drive or on audio CDs.
